How To Transfer Universities Successfully

If you are looking at transferring schools, I have been in your shoes. It is frightening, whether you are transferring schools across town, or across country, the experience is daunting. You need to be prepared to say goodbye to old friends and acquaintances, write essays, acquire transcripts and request letters of recommendations.

Once you are accepted to your university or universities of choice, now is the time for you to decide which university to attend. If money is an issue, look at how much they offer in scholarship. If money is not an issue, go to the campuses of these universities in order to see if you feel at home there. When I explored the University of Michigan campus, I was amazed at how natural it felt. Even though I had never been from a more urban-style campus, I felt at home. You may find that what you like in a university is not what you’d expect. That is why you should always visit.

So now you have chosen your university, you have sent in the enrollment deposit and signed up for orientation. My biggest piece of advice here is that you make an appointment with the advisor for the major you are expecting to choose. The general advisors are quite useful for getting the basic general education requirements out of the way, but the courses in your major and in what order you take them should be handled directly by an advisor for the department. I made this mistake my first term and regretted it deeply.
