My Community College Experience

Community colleges provide opportunities to students who may not have otherwise had access to these opportunities. They help guide students and provide the students with enough confidence to go beyond what they had previously seen themselves doing. The support of the community college faculty and staff is essential to the success of the students. Community colleges provide courses for cheaper and, often times, easier than their university equivalents.

I attended a community college for two and a half years. I entered community college as a timid seventeen year-old with very limited school experience. When I left community college, I was a multi-national award winning scholar with ten different scholarships, some local, some state, and some national. I attribute much of my success to those around me. I learned from students just as much as I learned from faculty. No matter who I spoke to though, for the most part, gave me all of their support. The faculty at the school had the attitude of, “If you can dream it, I will help you”. This attitude carried me to new heights and I could not have accomplished anywhere near what I have without the endless support provided to me.

I started my time at community college taking four courses: College Algebra, English Composition I, Art Appreciation, and World Civilizations II. I must say, when I started at community college, I was doubtful of what it could do for me, so I refused to drop my two jobs. I continued working and only gave what limited time I had left to my courses. As the old adage…
