My Introduction To A Temp Job
I am a student at the University of Michigan. I do not have much in the way of funds, but I do typically have enough to support myself. At the very least, I have enough foresight to determine how much money I need for my next semester or school year.
I have spent the Summer working for a professor at the university and I have been paid a decent wage. Though, when I calculated my monthly expenses and averaged it across a semester, I was not going to have enough to afford the following term. This concerned me, so I immediately began to look for a job before school starts in September. A month and a half is not a lot of time to A.) find a job and B.) Work enough to accrue a decent amount of money. As luck would have it, I received an email from the conferences and event services department looking for temp workers for two weeks that paid almost exactly the discrepancy that I needed to fill. This offer felt surreal, as though it had come straight from a sitcom.
I immediately applied for this position. I was quickly hired on and went through training earlier today. The conference that I am helping to put on starts soon and goes until August third. I was apprehensive about this job at first, but I figured the positive outweighs the negative. I was worried that the people would be rude or unorganized. I had concerns that the individuals hired would be treated terribly because they were temp workers. With all these thoughts going through my mind, I had quite a bit of anxiety going into training today.
I have never been more happy to be wrong in my life! The conference leads were all friendly and kind. None of them should any negativity towards the temps. The conference leads spent the training session today making sure that the new hires felt as comfortable as possible with their new jobs. All in all, it was a great experience. I am glad I went through this training session, as it helped alleviate my concerns in regards to this job.
