The Daunting Journey to Find an Internship

Trying to find an internship, especially in tech, is quite difficult. It makes for a rough ride for any newcomer. I had no idea what to expect, what to do, or how to do it. All I knew is that if I did nothing, nothing would happen. I searched on Google for data science internships for the Summer of 2019. This search brought back relatively few opportunities. I decided to widen my search to that of just computer science. I found many more opportunities, but very few were within reach. As someone with a rather limited set of computer science courses and relatively little experience in the field, I had no idea what jobs I could potentially get. I knew that applying to Google, Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Netflix, etc… were far out of my reach, but I continued. I applied for jobs varying from local start-ups to Capital One banking. Though I knew my shot at these companies were slim at best, I knew it I needed to put my name out there. Luckily, I got an email from one of the company’s recruiters. This led to my next hurdle of finding an internship, the interview.

As I readied for my interview, I had all manner of thoughts going through my head. I thought things like, “What if they ask a question I don’t know?”, “What do I do if they ask what prior experience I have had?”, “How do I know what is right or wrong?” These questions plagued me from quite some time leading up to my…
